Attractions

Discover the green island of Greece

Artemisio is one of the most ancient monuments of the island. It dates to the 6th century BC located south of Diode theories on the hillside on an artificial terrace.

The Sanctuary of Poseidon, situated a short distance from the sea to the east of the harbor and just opposite one of the gates of the coastal wall, was easily accessible to seafarers. In front of the facade, there is a very well maintained altar to Hera. The Sanctuary of Poseidon dates back to the 4th century BC.

The Archaeological Museum of Thassos, is another interesting attraction of the island whose major finding is Krioforos Kouros 7th century BC, with a height of 3.5 meters. This finding represents a naked young man holding a ram.

The Monastery of Archangel Michael Thassos, which was founded by the Mount Athos monastery Filotheos. The exact time of its foundation is unknown but its existence was first mentioned in 1287 in an official document. In 1835 some repairs were made. The church has a length of 9 m. a width of 5 m. and a height of 3 m.

Giola Beach

Giola is a special case of a lake, something like a lagoon, a natural pool with green water on the side of the sea. It looks like a swimming pool, its size is 20 to 15 meters long. The waves of the sea and the rocks that encircle it were formed over the centuries by the proponents.

Its green waters, which are warmer than those of the sea, are about three meters deep. Its two sides are lowered until they reach the other end, touching almost the surface of the sea.

Each wave of the sea slowly renews the crystal water of the natural pool. You can swim, dove from the “stairs” that form the rocks, and sunbathe on the wide rocks around.

Monastery of Archangel Michael

The women’s Monastery of Archangel Michael is the largest and most famous monastery of Thassos and is a significant pilgrimage. It is built on the edge of a cliff, near the village of Theologos and the view of the Aegean is truly magnificent, giving the visitor a sense of hovering.

In this place, ascetic Loukas, obeying the command of Archangel Michael, built in 1110 AD. a small chapel in which it has sprinkled holy water. According to the tradition, the source once wanted to be called untrustworthy Turks. At that time it dried up in a miraculous way, and it sprouted, and still springs, into a cave close to the sea. The sacraments fell dead.
